United Airlines Baggage Policies

United Baggage Allowances

Regardless of where you're going, you’ll want to make sure what you’re bringing is allowed. Here are the rules.

Carry-on Baggage

Carry-on baggage policies for all United travel

For worldwide travel on any United flight, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a briefcase, garment bag, laptop computer, purse or small backpack. Your carry-on bag...
  • must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin;
  • must not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches* (114 linear cm); and
  • may be required to travel as checked baggage if the bag cannot be safely stowed on your flight.
The following personal items are not counted toward your one bag carry on and one personal item limit:
  • Assistive devices (canes, crutches, etc.)
  • Child safety seats for ticketed children
  • Infant restraint devices (infant seat with or without stroller, front pouch or back carrier)
  • Outer garments (coats, hats, etc.)
  • Reading material (a reasonable amount)
  • Umbrellas (one per passenger)
  • Food and beverages to be consumed onboard
Please note that all items must be stowed in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. They may not be stowed in the seat back pocket.

Liquids, gels and aerosols

Liquids, gels and/or aerosols are permitted through security checkpoints worldwide. Items must fit in one clear, resealable quart- or liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 3 oz. (100 mL) or less.

Plastic bags must be completely sealed and will be x-rayed separately at the security checkpoint.

The following items are allowed but must be presented to officials at security checkpoints if they are of greater volume than 3 oz. (100 mL):
  • Baby formula/milk, including breast milk and baby food in containers. You do not have to be traveling with a baby or small child for these items to be allowed.
  • Medications (liquid, gel or aerosol)
  • Liquids, juices or gels for diabetic passengers who indicate a need for such items to address their medical condition. (A letter from your physician is not necessary.)
Liquids, gels and/or aerosols (including duty-free items) purchased in the boarding area are permitted onboard the aircraft.

United Checked Baggage

The checked baggage policy for United Economy travel wholly within the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. If you are traveling on an Economy ticket or an Economy award ticket, please see the information below regarding checked baggage fees that may apply.

All fees shown below are for one direction of travel only, and apply only when checking in with United. If you will be checking in with a United codeshare partner, please contact that carrier regarding its baggage policies. Fees shown below are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise specified.

For customers who are not exempt, first and second bag fees (each way) when paid at the airport are $25 for the first bag and #35 for the second checked bag.
